31st May, 2007. 12:16 am. shilling for the Man

http://www.microsoft.com/surface/

It actually looks pretty cool and it's coming out later this year. I'm not quite sure what the plan is (if there's any) for people to buy them individually, though... it seems less cool if it's only going to be available in public places.

25th May, 2007. 4:48 pm. Wisdom teeth removal

Pros and cons of getting your wisdom teeth removed:
pros:
a) get to stay home from work
b) don't get horrible infections from leaving them in
c) you get to try Vicodin, which is one of the first narcotics I've had. Didn't do much for me except make me really sleepy, though.

cons:
a) $1800, of which my insurance only pays $1100 or so (mainly because I hit my spending limit)
b) when eating, stuff gets stuck in the back of your mouth near the stitches, which not only hurts, but is sort of gross, since you have to fish it out or rinse it out
c) because of b), constant hunger (not because the stuck food is so delicious, but because it hurts to eat)
d) having to wear an ice pack all the time to keep the swell swelling down
e) doing it over a holiday weekend means minimal work missed and maximum fun time missed

I've been applying myself, though. I finally downloaded the Halo 3 beta and played a game, beat Republic Commando, and downloaded the DEFCON demo. I'd totally buy the whole thing if someone else would play...

Current mood: hungry/sleepy.

8th May, 2007. 11:02 am. the Crystal link show

Started a food log at http://www.calorie-count.com. I'm curious about my nutrition and how many calories I actually eat during a day, but I bet I'll start eating less once I start consciously thinking about eating...

Today, so far: 1 banana. Whee!

24th April, 2007. 4:01 pm. Interesting article by Michael Pollan

Another Crystal-forwarded article, this one less ominous than the last:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/22/magazine/22wwlnlede.t.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5087%0A&em&en=955cc305987d1146&ex=1177560000

About the farm bill and how it affects the food supply. It's encouraging to hear that it might not just be the status quo this time... also, the author of the article is also the author of Omnivore's Dilemma, which is highly recommended if you're at all interested in food, nutrition, or the food supply.

18th April, 2007. 9:19 pm. Infested computers

While I was surfing the web today through remote desktop, I somehow got spyware bombed. I think I was skipping between Facebook & ESPN, and it happened when I closed a window -- maybe I misclicked and hit a link instead of the actual window close button. Regardless, my Symantec client started screaming about files it was trying to quarantine, and my computer slowed to a crawl. It looks like whatever got onto my computer was not only downloading lots of stuff, but also attempting to close down SAV. Anyways... I shut down my computer (to prevent more infection,) and cleaned it out when I got home (through safe mode and then some deep Spybot/Ad-Aware scanning.)

So this is when people generally tell me to stop surfing warez sites or switch to Firefox/Opera. The thing is, I was using Firefox, and I use Firefox pretty much exclusively (occasionally I'll switch to IE7 when I try to use local.live.com because it's much faster.) I also wasn't doing anything weird -- I'm usually pretty careful to not let sites install software or do anything fishy. I'm pretty sure I didn't click on anything that would have allowed random installs, either. Anyways... maybe I switch to Linux :-/ But, I guess then I'd never be able to figure out how to fix a problem like this... (and I couldn't play games!)
The other weird thing: even though I was using Firefox, the spyware still hacked my IE so that I'd get tons of popups. Sigh.

Addendum: it wasn't that easy. I noticed that these two .dlls kept coming back, and this one file would be repeatedly written to. I tried deleting them, but they were locked by the system (winlogon.exe.) Booting into safe mode net the same effect; you just couldn't get rid of them. To make things worse, no one seems to have encountered this particular piece of spyware before: searching for wvuvvwu.dll nets absolutely nothing. (It comes with a companion .dll, gebyy.dll, but the name seems to have been copied from another piece of spyware so that you'd download the removal tools for that one.) The only way to fix it -- and this is after you kill all of the update programs and everything else that it explicitly runs -- was for me to boot off of a Windows CD into recovery console and delete them there. You can't easily kill winlogon.exe, and even if you did manage that without blue-screening your computer, I suspect they would get locked by some other process. I'll spare everyone my thoughts on draconian law enforcement, but I'm certainly thinking it...

Current mood: irritated.
Current music: Rancid - Indestructible.

14th April, 2007. 1:54 pm. Now watching out for: white men who make $24,000 less than me

http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/04/13/single-female-seeking-same-race-male/

Crystal forwarded me this article this morning... hopefully not as a hint. It's pretty interesting, though, but I'm curious if gay people exhibit similar selection.

Another interesting article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/10/health/10gene.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1. Mostly unrelated, though: it's about sexual preferences and genetics.

Current mood: awake.
Current music: Green Day - Jinx.

3rd April, 2007. 1:54 pm. It's baseball season!

And you know what that means: Armando blowing saves, a number of questionable calls, possibly mediocre performances by the $127 million dollar man, and a lot of the Aflac duck.

Of course, they could put it all together, and then I'll stop counting down the days until the Raiders start their 1-15 season.

And now, Bonds hit a weak grounder down to third for an easy single (due to the shift.) And then he steals second. I have no idea what omen that's sending for this season...

Current mood: sick.
Current music: Barenaked Ladies - Some Fantastic.

1st April, 2007. 10:09 pm. Where does the time go?

Three things that have wasted my time recently, four that will in the future:
a) Supreme Commander
b) Command & Conquer 3
c) Railroad Tycoon 3
d) Major League Baseball

One thing I discovered: my good memories of Sizzler aren't actually all false. Except for the memory of being uncomfortably full.

Current mood: full.
Current music: The All-American Rejects - My Paper Heart.

Ever have those days where you wake up and you realize "wow, I really don't want to go to work today?" This is the second day in a row, and I already took a day off yesterday... :(

But in good news, I got my tax refund today :)

Current mood: restless.

19th March, 2007. 8:07 pm. I like salty

Part of the reason I like making meals for myself is because it's supposedly healthy for you. It's pretty easy for me to make something fairly low-fat, since I'm not a big fan of butter or cream or lard as a seasoning or snack. However, while looking over ingredient labels, I do realize I have to add a lot of salt to make things taste good. I tried using season-all and adding more of other flavors to hide the salt, but I think I just really like salty tastes. I guess I'll go on being unhealthy for now, until I get horrible hypertension or something. On the plus side, though, I read that getting more potassium will increase the amount of sodium that is excreted. Daily guidelines call for nearly five grams of potassium... which means that all I have to do every day is eat eleven bananas (unless they're salted.)

Current mood: hungry.
Current music: A-ha - Take on Me.
